Gastro Enterology
Gastro Enterology is a speciality concerned with the digestive system and its allied organs. The Digestive Tract includes the Oral Cavity (mouth), Pharynx, Oesophagus, Stomach, Duodenum, Small Intestine and Large Intestine. Apart from the GI tract other organs related to digestion and absorption like Liver, Pancreas, Biliary Tract and Spleen also come under this speciality.

After the invention of endoscopy and laparoscopy has been a significant change in the approach to and understanding of the GI diseases. These endoscopic and laparoscopic procedures are not only used for diagnostic purposes but also for therapeutic purposes. The commonly encountered GI diseases in our day-to-day practice and their symptoms are listed below.

Peptic Ulcer Diseases Burning sensation in chest and upper abdomen, pain abdomen, vomiting, loss of appetite , bloating sensation.

Gallbladder and Biliary Disease Pain, bloating sensation of stomach, vomiting, belching, jaundice, yellowish discoloured urine, itching, sometimes fever.

Pancreatic Disease Pain upper abdomen, radiating to back vomitting, abdominal distension, fever, dehydration, belching.

Chronic Liver Disease Loss of appetite, vomiting, abdominal distension, jaundice, vomiting of blood, passing black colored stools.

GI Cancer Disease Loss of appetite, loss of weight, anemia, vomiting, blood vomiting in upper GI cancers.
In lower GI cancers bleeding PE, alteration of constipation with diarrhoea, loss of weight, generalised weakness, etc.

Perianal Diseases like Piles, Fissure,  Fistula in ano, Perianal abscess Bleeding per rectum, mass in the perianal region, pain & burning sensation while passing motion, pus discharge from perianal region, swelling with severe pain in perianal region.

Inflammatory Bowel diseases like Ulcerative Colitis, Crohn's Disease. Pain, passing mucous in stools, bloody stools, vomiting, abdominal distension.

GI Bleeding Can occur in peptic ulcer, portal hypertension with Oesophageal varices, GI malignancies and Ulcerative Colitis as blood vomiting, bleeding per rectum and black colored stools.
